It s a mystery with no witnesses or elues. Who got them, where did they go, why were they taken? This youngster from many years ago is shown beside one of two cannonball stacks at the former court house building in downtown Statesville/ Bob Plyler-Iredell Citizen Bv BOB PLYLFR Iredell Citizen A lot of things are easily lost - car keys, life savings, reputation, religion and health but Iredell County came up with a new wrinkle. When you come downtown, do you ever have the feeling something is missing? Well, wonder no more for we’ve found, out, but what we can’t find out is why they are missing. Give up? It’s the cannon balls. For years, two piles of cannonballs were stacked, one for each cannon, on the old courthouse lawn. Then, for no apparent reason, both stacks disap peared. Our crack investigators, leaving no stone or ball unturned, have come with zilch. Talking with government officials pro vided no new information. From City Hall to the halls ot county government, no one seems to know.' One opinion put forth by an unidenti fied source is that Yankees from Ohio ' carried them off to Florida. This could not be confirmed. This is a grave situation. Now listen up you guys! We need your L. help! If the South’s going to rise again we sure as heck gotta get them can nonballs back!
